Getting code 10 95 E320 engine is revving up and down inconsistently
I have a 95 E20 wagon / It is now revving /surging the engine up and down like ur pumping gas and letting off gas I am getting a code 10 from the DTC Diagnostic Module Last week I had a radiator light problem now that has gone away

You might try a search on the OVP, sounds suspicious. I do not know about the codes.

When my car did that about 6 mos ago it was the MAS (Mass Air Sensor) which code 10 implies. See below. Codes from somebody else, from another thread, a long time ago.

Where is this mass air thing and how and how much to replace? OVP i just replaced that 4 months ago
|
The mass air thing is the item between the intake and the air box with a wire attached to it coming from the battery area. It has a round connector that twists off. Remove it while its running and see if this solves the problem, If it does then most likely the mass air meter needs replacement. IF it still does it after replacement, then I would say your wiring harness is suspect if it has never been replaced. Do a search on this forum and you will find plenty about it including stuff I have posted as well.

I unplugged the mass air circular switch out and engine still is revving (not missing) just revving between 5000 and 10000 rpm up and down and it does it irregularly like when its cold or hot /at a stop light sometimes and in the garage usually after driving it around. Engine temp is fine/seems to be a tad worse in gas mileage/ a really strong chemical smell halfway between gas exhaust and something chemical. Replace ovp relay a few months ago/ has 188,000 bought it 1 year ago w/ 159,000 miles. The DTC is pulling a code 10 which is the mass air flow issue. HELP

You can go to Pin 8 and Pin 14 using a led/sw and retrieve codes for the HFM and EA/ISC/CC modules:
EA - electronic accelerator ISC - idle speed control CC - cruise control Throttle Actuator is a possible suspect for fluctuating throttle. |
what is a throttle actuator and where in the engine do i find it? Can be clean and put back in?
|
Throttle Actuator is refered to as the EA/ISC/CC. Wiring in this module disintegrates. Replacement is around $1400.00. This is a fairly common problem on this model, along with the engine wiring harness issue.
You can go to each individual module like the Engine Control Module Pin 8, and the EA/ISC/CC module Pin 14 to see if any codes are stored. If it is a MAF issue, you will find codes stores in Pin 8. DM codes are general and are related to emissions. You have to go to each individual modules to get specific codes. Do a search on Led/sw and you will find the required information. |
This may have nothing at all to do with your problem, but I have the exact same car, and a few months ago I misadjusted the Bowden cable trying to eliminate a flaring shift and it exhibited the same symptoms until I reset the adjustment.
Probably wouldn't set a Code 10 though (could that have been set by another unrelated problem?) And, if it does have to do with the throttle linkage, only reason why it does it sometimes and not others is that something is broken in the linkage and catches occasionally. |
Exposed wires in the EA/ISC/CC can also create intermitent short circuits.
|
The throttle actuator is underneath the intake manifold.

Wow 1400 thats expensive / is there anything i can do short of doing this? Incidentally, the only time it surges is when it is in the PARK position. In DRIVE it does not surge. Does this give you anymore clues?

Check EGR
I have a 94 E320, 160K and had the same problem. I replaced the Mass Air-flow sensor ($400) and it did not fix the problem. A shop found a plugged, 50% restricted, EGR valve. I apparently made a mistake of using a fuel injector, gas additive cleaner, that broke loose a lot of carbon (?).
|
Hey Thanks, your getting me encouraged because during the last 7 months i get a sporadic dtc code 5 which is the egr and i keep clearing it. Can you tell me where this EGR is and how do I clean/replace(how much)?
