Should I just rebuild my M110 or can I put a Mercedes V-8 in There? can a jig motor (made of styrofoam) be purchased? If I had a Jig I bet I could make it fit somehow. I have no knowledge of how the mounts look on any car other than the 280c. Any help on compatible engines would be appreciated.

As the 350SL(R107) is almost the same car(underhood) as the W114(280) that you have, I would think it would fit. The 3.8/3.8/4.2 engines are of a narrow design & would work better that the other engines(4.5/5.0/5.6).

Need V-8 trans also
If you decide to try installing a MB V-8 you will need the trans that goes with that engine, the old trans won't bolt to a V-8.

Keep it straight 6. The engine compartment is might narrow on that 114 chassis, even a 280c. If you're going to go to a heavier motor, you'll need to consider better brakes, springs, new exhaust, tranny and the engine. Watch also for fun things like steering linkages being in the way.

that 4300 v-6 is smaller than any V-8. That engine is compact on top of being a V-6. A 283 chevrolet will not go in without an electric fan and water pump. So I thought a Mercedes might fit because all of their engines are sort of crammed in there. I sell wholesale engines, and one that is affordable for me is the SL350. It cost almost the same as the M110 and obviously has more appeal. I love to hear that it could or will work before I buy the engine. My mantra ove r the years has been to build cars that look stock but could not have existed. I want a small mercedes with a V-8, a mercedes V-8.

By SL350, you mean the 350sl M116 engine with a cast iron block?
Your posts come with a www address that doesn't respond. It's 24.16.60.76, which I can ping, but not get any response from the web server. Does it have a name? -CTH |

Why do you need on to my Server?
I can let you on if you tell me your IP address and what you want on there.

When MB Doc says "Try to install a V-8" it does not instill confidence. I am starting to realize maybe it is not such a good idea.

Keep it 6 cylinder is the best I guess
Are these cars worth anything restored correctly? I hate to put a new 6 in there for it to be worth the cost of the engine. The car is nice, to answer that question.

Unfortunately, the car won't be worth as much as the job done right.
We used to do 20-30 motors a year. Now we do about 6. This is because of two things: with cars running cleaner has come vastly extended engine life and the cost to restore has reached the value at half-life. I was in Aruba two weeks ago and was proudly shown a pair of early Corvettes (56 and 63) that would easily be worth 30-40k each.... after a 50-60k restoration.. BTW most of the motors we do are for cars that aren't worth the cost of the repair (240D - 300SD). Usually it is for someone who is the original owner or bought when very new and has driven it for more than 100k.

Even a 2 Door coupe?
I would think that a 2 door would be worth it. A 64 impala 4 door is worth more as an artificial reef than as a car, but a 2 door is a real jewel. These cars don't follow that rule?

The value is very sensitive to the condition of the body. There are some perfect, rust-free examples out there that command respect and money.
The 114 coupe is a very sexy car, worth more for its looks than the equivalent 4-door. There were countless thousands of them, so they're not rare. Given them 15 years and the nice ones will be worth more. -CTH |
