I need a trailer hitch for a 1985 300DT

I'm new to Mercedes...just bought a very nice 1985 300 diesel wagon off this forum.

I'd like to put a trailer hitch on it...2000-pound capacity...I called U-Haul and they don't have anything...they only go back to 1986.

Anyone know where I can get a hitch?

Thanks...

You don't say where you are located, so if you are in Podack, Iowa, you may have a problem. If you are in or near a major city, look for a professional hitch installation company. They should carry product lines like Draw-Tite and find you a good quality hitch. Prepare to pay several hundred dollars, but towing is no game. You can run into serious safety and liability issues with some cheap-ass bumper hitch. You want a hitch that bolts to the car. Trust me. I have alot of experience towing.

Good luck,
Peter

Thanks Peter,

I'm in Albuquerque, NM.

Isn't U-Haul a "professional hitch installation company"?

I mean, if THEY don't know of a hitch, I'm wondering who the heck would...

Thanks again...

U Haul rents stuff and installs a hitch if you don't have one. The company in the Bay area that I trust is Barstad & Donicht. Their # is (510) 357-0777. You could give them a call to see if they know of a reputable installer in your area.

That is a good website that Palangi pointed out. I book marked it for future reference. The key point is that hitches are still available for the 123 chassis. I would suggest a receiver tube type over fixed on a wagon. Fixed are cheaper, but are bruised and battered shins worth the savings. Also I would still contact a professional installation shop, buy the hitch through them, and have them install it. The labor charge is minimal compared to you spending a weekend gathering up all the drills and tools needed to do the job. As a professional MB mechanic with a full blown shop at my disposal, that is the way I would personally go.

trailer hitch

I found a "Hidden Hitch" model 40-7127 65320 at a country auction.
It's rated at 2000 lbs and made to fit various Chrysler models but fits a W126 with no alterations to hitch or car. Took maybe one hour to install with ordinary hand tools

U-Haul is decent. But they have a limited supply source. When I bought my Astro Van I was given a class 3 hitch by the dealer. (Well a voucher to have U-haul put one on.) U-haul installed a class 2. Since thats all they could 'get'. Clearly they were mistaken, since I demanded and got a class 3 hitch installed elsewhere.
