I bought a hood star, but it is not the right one. Is a w114 and a w115 the same star?

WmHarlow 12-18-2000 12:01 PM

Hood stars should be the same for W114 and W115. There are two different styles... removable and non-removable, but they look the same.

Star base

The star I was sent has too small of a base to cover the hole in the grill. Does that help? Is there another base piece I am missing, somebody, please send a close up photo of what I should have.

You may have gotten the wrong star kit for your car. Yes, it does come in kit form(about four pieces)and is fairly hard to install. It is best to remove the base from the grill and get the base(looks a radiator cap) on a bench where you can work on it.
The part number for your car-115 586 04 88 and should cost about $15.50.
Hood stars for the 123 and 126 chassis are easy to install.

Stupid as a rock

So I have the right Star, but need a base as well? I only have a hole at this point (he he). Seriously folks, Do I need another part besides the grill and the Star kit? (4 pieces)

Hood Star

You should have the piece that looks like a radiator cap.If not, you will have to get one and I would think they would cost more than the $15.50 for the star kit.Is the star you have in one piece? If so, then you have the wrong star. You may have the star with the part number 201 880 00 86. If your car is a 114/115 chassis, it takes the star repair kit no. 115 586 04 88 and does consist of about four pieces.Good luck and keep us posted.

Pieces are Star, hook, spring, tube, keeper pin.

5 pieces actually. No radiator cap-looking piece. Since I have no idea what this looks like, I am going to the junkyard to see what I can find.

That's The best thing to do. Go to a salvage yard and just see what it is you need. Best of luck to you and be sure and keep us posted

Yes, you are missing the base piece. Good luck finding one in a junkyard. :)

I found what it is I am looking for.

On a 450sl, but could not find the correct Star Base. The 450sl is for a bigger hole than the 280c. I also found this cool radio, http://24.16.60.76/radio.jpg in a car like mine at the junkyard. Why are there so many valve covers removed on the engines in the junkyards? what are people after that do that? What is the radio worth? I already have a better radio, it is not original, like this one? I suppose this is the right radio because of how it was installed, but who knows.
