Breakin' up is hard to do.

We were married for nearly 14 years. She's been true to me all those years. She never asked more than a normal amount of care and never, even once, let me down.
Now with almost 449K on the clock, she wants to leave me.
My neighbour came to our house this afternoon saying he was looking for a safe/solid car as the first car for his 17yo. kid. He told me he always had an eye on my old faithfull and made me an offer I could not refuse. Done deal.
She' ll be leaving next Thrusday for the rest of her life.
She has been so good to me. I'll really miss her.
Now what do I buy to replace her?
She was a 1989, 260E with all her theeth, original engine, (valve job done at 200K), original transmission, original paint, even an original A/C evaporator.

Well you did have one heck of a run with her! Is it 449k miles or kilometers? Wow either way thats a lot!

The W210's are very nice and the W211's are extremly nice. The new E350 coming out next year should be a very nice package.

I totally understand. I am at a point where I absolutely don't need my 300E any more. I can't justify keeping it, but I can't stand to part with it. Mine is a very rare 5 Speed manual car and I really love driving it. It's a tough decision to make.

Good luck,
Doc

Here's a neat google trick. Type in 449 * .62 and it will give you the conversion.

Mileage is 449,000 kilometer....or 279,000 miles.
Yes., original transmission, never been opened, except for the normal oil pan removal when replacing transmission oil/filter.
Except for the replacement of normal wear items, very little has been required on the car.
Head gasket/valve job, shocks, rear suspension bushings, 2 front ball joints, ONE muffler-tail pipe are the only "major(?)" repairs done on the car.
This car has been an example or impressive reliability, low up-keep cost an total satisfaction for 14 years.
Presently looking at a 1995 E320 with 115,000km (71,000mi) on the clock. Original owner is selling and he has all the maintenance records since new.
Asking price is $CAN8,500.00 which is only $CAN3,500. more than what I sold my old 1989 for.

Don't be sad. Sometimes things need to move on.
My daughters car is just this example.
Her 1983 240D in Orient Red, which is really "Texas A&M maroon" was bought brand new in the European delivery, by an Aggie (class of 1960) Driven by his wife for 12 years. Given to their son while he was at Texas A&M, He graduated, then given to their second son while he was at Texas A&M. He got rid of it Nov 2003. We bought it after talking to the second son, from a dealer. Completely went through the car and now my daughter loves her car and has brought it back home to Texas A&M. At least for 2 more years ( or untill she decides she wants a Masters)
So hopefully, someone has your car, really wants it.

Dave

The '95 E320 sounds nice. Comes with the spiffy wheels too I think.

Henceforth, this should be referred to as the "Neal Sedaka" thread. For you younger readers, this will mean nothing.

Have a great day,

I know how you feel, Jackd.

My 300E has 305,000 Km on the clock and lately I had been trying to decide whether to spend a grand or so to fix her up for another 100,000 Km or sell and get a newer car.

Well, I've decided to keep the car, spend a bit and see if I can't get 400,000 Km myself! This 300E has been a dream as well - absolutely original engine (not even valve stem seals replaced), original tranny, etc. Most recent service was two new tied rods and door check straps. Absolutely 100% reliable and a pleasure to drive.

So I'll spend a bit on touching up the body (minor rust spots), might contemplate a head job, and other than that, I'm hoping for another 100,000 Km....we'll see!

Good luck on your next purchase, it'll be hard to replace her! The W124 chassis has been a dream to work on - the newer ones won't be so easy!
