M113 - Lower Oil Pan Removal - How To Break Free From The Sealant?

The lower oil pan on the M113 is gasketed with Loctite 5900 sealant instead of a normal gasket. I need to remove this lower oil pan to replace the oil level sensor.

I have all the bolts removed, but cannot free the pan due to the Loctite sealant acting like an adhesive. There is a pair of tabs extending from the left side of the pan which can be used to lever it open; but try as I might, I can't get it to break free. I'm afraid that if I lever it harder, I'll bend the tabs and deform the pan.

Any suggestions on how to loosen this thing so I can remove it? TIA!! DUTCH

Lightbulb Easy, Buy 1" Putty Knife!

Hey, this is easy for the most part. Buy a 1" wide putty knife with a fairly solid handle. Tap it in between the pan and the block with light taps of a hammer in the most accessible place. Then turn in what ever direction you need to go and work it along the pan.

You should not have to beat it up. Easy taps. Work into all the areas you can. Then if you can't get to all of them, when most of it is loose you can lever with the putty knife. It will flex and do less damage to the seat. If you need more torque pry open with the putty knife enough to get a larger flat pry bar in for the final pop off, the wider the better. The quality of the knife will determine the strength you have to work with.

Once off use the putty knife to scrape it all away!

Thanks for the idea. In this case it's not between the pan and the block, but is between the upper pan and the lower pan, but the theory is the same. I'll give it a try, although I'm still a little concerned about damaging the aluminum edge. Thanks.

Arrow Gently! Gently!

Yep, be real gentle. If your having to really whack it, there is another problem.

Ray's link above points out another good recommendation. Double check that you found all the bolts. The diagrams on his links will guide you!
