whats up with my brakes?

i cant figure out what is going on. brake res. is full, dont see any leaks around the wheels either. when i apply my brakes sometimes they go way down, but not to the floor and some times when i apply them they are fine. pads are good too. its alittle freaky when sometimes you push them and they catch like they should and sometimes the peddle goes way down. if i pump once or twice before i apply them they work great. wtf? old fluid maybe or flush and pressure bleed job time?
thanks
forgot to add its a 92 190e 2.3

Possible internal leak in the master cylinder

Ali Al-Chalabi 03-24-2005 11:21 PM

If they are bled properly, I would go with the master cylinder as a possible culprit. When you hold the brake pedal down, does it slowly sink to the floor, or does it hold steady in the same position?

its weird really, sometimes they are as strong as they should be and then out of the blue they fade fast, but are still able to stop the car ok. it fades about 3 times out of 10 when i have to use them.

If it's not a vacuum leak then Jerry and Ali are right, it's the master cylinder. Get this fixed before you drive any where. If you don't you will find your car will make a 20' stop in only 18', after that you'll need bodywork and a lawyer. :sun_smile

i didnt think about a vacuum leak, ill check for that also, wheres the vacuum lines at? around the brake peddle?

Ali Al-Chalabi 03-26-2005 09:50 AM

Vacuum lines runs from the vacuum booster to the intake manifold.
