Hey 16V engine experts!!

How hard is it to replace the timing chain tensioner on a 16V? My timing chain rattles when starting cold and needs to be replaced. I'd like to also replace the tensioner with the updated version, that holds the chain until oil pressure builds up. So, does the entire engine have to be removed to replace the tensioner, or does just the head have to be removed. I'm having the guides replaced and valves ground this winter anyway, so could the tensioner easily be replaced at the same time?

Really the front cover & pan should come off to do this job on this car properly! About 12-15hrs of work.

Does the front cover HAVE to come off, or is it just a lot easier that way? Taking the front cover off shouldn't be too hard, if the radiator is removed, right?

The reason for the front cover removal is you have to take it off to get to the lower rail. IF you don't replace that rail, you are just playing with fire.

The oil pan has to come off BEFORE the front cover because the oil pickup is attatched to the front cover and will hit the pan if not taken off first.

Thanks for your insight. Can the oil pan be removed with the engine in the car? I seem to remember reading somewhere, that there isn't enough clearance.

It will come out otherwise labor would be 20+ hrs. Had it off the racecar many times in the car.

Do you guys have any more tips that would be helpful for this job? I'm sure both of you have probably had the engine apart on your racecars more often than you'd like to remember ;-), and so have gathered a lot of knowledge about it.

I just have an question about the timing chain tensioner, few year ago...I had to bring the car in for engine work, the shop clear the valve and switch out anything that was
worn (since he took the engine apart) which include a timing
chain tensioner....my question is if you order that part now...dose it automaticlly mean is a updated version?! Please help...and about the rattaling sounds...when does it occur? After the car startup( just before it startup) or before?? thanx.....merry christmas!!

If you purchase the tensioner from a dealer or specify the modified # to PartsShop, I'm sure that you will get the modified part. YOU will know this part as it is very $$$$
The # is 102-050-17-11, also they will send (5) five together with parts that are needed to use this part. list PRICE IS $370 not including the +(5) parts!

what if i just replace my tensioner with the regular 30 dollar
102.050.10.11 timing chain tensioner i really dont have the extra dough for the newer one and i really need the tensioner but only the tensioner , the rest rails and chain are in good shape

hey guys what if i just replace my tensioner with the regular 30 dollar one i really dont have the extra cash and all i need is the tensioner, rails are fine
