What is your oil pressure at IDLE?
Anybody with an M103 engine wanna tell me what their oil pressure is that 80C and in Drive at Idle?

1 Bar at idle once fully warmed up. Being at 80C doesn't necessarily infer the motor is warmed up.

My cars are diesels, but I don't think that makes a difference. With the engine fully warmed up like being on the highway it should be between 1-1.5 bar. When the rpms get up to about 1500 your pressure should be pegged at 3 bar.

Yeah the M104s have a 10:1 compression ratio... maybe that has an effect on the pressure... (M103 has 9.1:1....)

My 104 is at 3 when cold, just over 2 at idle and even after driving on the highway, although it used to be under 2 until I switched to synthetic oil.

MB's minimum specs are .3 bar at hot idle and 3 bar by 3k rpm. As long as you are within that range according to MB you are fine. However anything lower then 1bar at idle would bother me.

Right around 1 bar at idle on my 103. On a hot day driving on freeway with a/c on, etc. it goes just under 1 bar ... about .8 -- not surprising since the engine has 247k on it. It always pegs at 3 though under load.

it depends on the oil. with 10W-40, idles at a little over 1 bar fully warmed up, with 15W-50, idles at a little over 1 1/2 when fully warmed up.

I run 20w50 and when the engine is very hot I get 1 bar at idle. But I use an OEM filter from the dealer now; when I had a Fram on there previously, pressure at idle was only about .3 bar and the gauge would peg at only 2.5 to 2.75. Took the Fram out, and everything bas back to normal. Scary stuff!

LOL, think about the name of their air filter, AIR HOG... ummmmm, I don't want my car to perform like a hog, they are dirty, slow, ugly.... etc LOL! My car idles 1 bar at 80C in Drive gear after a long highway trip... just wanted to make sure that was normal.. thanks for all the input... but say.... in Texas the weather can be 50F one day and 90F the next... What weight of oil do you recommend I use with my engine? I was thinking that 15W-50 would be too high for those cold days... how about 15w-40 or 10w-40 or 10w-30???? |

In one 300 SEL I am running 15W-40 Delvac 1300 and it sits around 1.5 bars, hot idle in drive.
The other one has 5W-40 M1 Truck & SUV and it idles around 1 bar in drive. IIRC, the synthetics always idle lower pressure than the dino oils for some reason. The one running the Delvac 1300 also has a Wix filter on it with the newer silicon anti-drainback valve. The thing pressurizes immediately on startup and pegs a high 3 while driving. Rahulio I would go with the Delvac 1300... $6.32/gallon at wallyworld is hard to beat. |
I had no problems with Mobil 1 15w-50 in my crankcase this winter. If the temps dropped below -5 often I might need 5w-40. But she cranked over real fast with 15w-50 at 0.
