What can I expect to pay for a 400E?

Been looking and have seen some as low as $5500 for a 92 to as much as 7200 for a nice low milage 93. Anyone else been looking? What are the asking and going prices? Any non-typical W124 problems to look out for? How are the trannys holding up? Etc? Thanks! Clip

400e

Just bought a 92 400e, 97K mi, new Yokos, very clean, CD changer, sheepskins, etc. for $5500 on eBay.

I have a 90 300e that my wife has been commuting in for 2 years. She loves the car, except for fast merging onto the freeway. She called this morning and said she punched it merging onto the freeway (the 400e) and lit up the tires. No more complaints about being underpowered!

I got 25 mpg pushing it pretty hard from Albuquerque to Phoenix last week.

What a car!

Bump...

Any ideas on price ranges? I'm looking at a 92 400E that has 129,000 miles and just had the following done:

new Bosch alternator, new radiator, power steering pump, new valve cover gaskets, new grille, replaced high pressure hose for transmission, new battery, replaced 1 headlight. Air conditioner refurbished and auto climate control.

They want $5295. Seems a bit high but they did just put some money into the car.

I wonder what "refurbished" means for the A/C system ? If they put a new evaporator in it, I would say buy it. If not, that can be a very costly repair, even if you do it yourself.

How long should evaporators last in the 400E's? I guess it depends on how much the A/C was used but it there a mileage range for something like that? What is that a ~$1500 job or so?

Anyone?

$5500-6500 here for clean ones. Some with records, others without. Most are kept up well. There's a nice black one here hiding at the back of a lot I found for $6300 that's black on black, it's a 1992 with about 142k :)

Hope it helps.

I have a 93 400e with 153,000 miles. The only issues I've had with the A/C is the replacement of the blower motor resistor. This part cost approx $295.00. Although I did the replacement of the blower motor resistor myself, it wasn't a "quick and easy" task. From my understanding, the items that are prone to fail on the A/C with the w124's are the blower motor, blower motor resistor and climate control unit. I do have a 400SE (W140) that had the evaporator replaced which is VERY expensive. The S-Class, not the w124's, have the defective evaporator.

The part that I would be more concerned about is the upper engine wiring harness. If this item has not been replaced IT WILL FAIL! The cost for the wiring harness is approx $500. This isn't a difficult job to do yourself.

Check the condition of the transmission. How long does it take for reverse to engage. My 400e has started to suffer from a delayed reverse. It's on the list of items to have repaired, but since this car belongs to my son in high school, I'm delaying the work thinking he'll brake something else before I get to this major expense.

If the interior of the throttle body hasn't been cleaned of carbon, this will cause idle problems too. The 400e seems to quickly accumulate carbon buildups more that other models.

Since the car has the heavy M119 engine, the replacement of the motor mounts is common too.

There are a number of other items that I've replaced along the way, but all and all, I've been happy with my purchase.

Hope this helps…

Thanks! that's my price range. I'm willing to go a little higher for the right car. My only problem is going to be finding one somewhat local.
