W126 - Metal Groaning sound in Exhaust area on Right turn
My 1990 300SE makes a strange noise, like the metal groaning in Titanic (!), when I make a sharp right turn like in a 270-degree cloverleaf exit. It's very disturbing but I have heard this can occur simply from compressed air in the exhaust. Is this just something I can fix with a new muffler?
Thanks, Pete |
are all of your rubber mounting donuts in place?

As the engine mounts start to sag it allows the exhaust system to come in contact with the underbody cross member. If you look closely you'll see exactly where it's hitting. If this is the case replacing the engine mounts will cure the problem.

W126 Engine Mounts
Thanks! I'll look tonight.
BTW, is this a DIY job? |
Yes. In my opinion, the 300SE (126) may be the most DIY friendly MB ever built in the modern era.
