Replacing accumulators (spheres) before shocks

Hi,
I have a 1995 S500 and my the ride in the rear is very stiff. I can hear (very loudly) every single gap in the road from the right rear side of the car. It sounds like hitting an empty bucket.
The rear of the car is lower than the front.
I took it to a mechanic that services European cars and he says that it MIGHT be the shocks. However when I went to my mechanic and he lifter the car the shocks looked brand new and nothing seems to leak from them.
I do have a pair of new accumulators (spheres) that I have purchased and wanted to replace.

My question is: if i replace the accumulators (spheres) and the shocks are bad will that ruin the accumulators?
