I just purchased a 1995 E320 wagon that has had some major body work done on it. The steering wheel has obvious signs of being worked on. How can I check that air bags are installed and in "good" working order? The "SRS" light comes on with the key and then goes off. I assume that this "checks" the air bags and the various sensors. Is that correct? Should I inspect/test anything?

If your light turns on and then shuts off you can be 99.9% sure that everything is fine. Including all air bags and seat belt tensioners.
You can also be pretty sure that it has never been in a wreck, unless they changed the air bag sensor. It's pretty easy to check if somebody messed with it. The factory puts paint on the bolts that bolt the sensor to the body. It is located under you radio. Just remove the shifter wood and the ashtray.
They also have a serial number, so you can check with the dealer.
