My '86 560 SEL with 140K miles usually averages about 15 in town and 18 to 19 on the highway at speeds of 70 to 80 mph. I have kept records since the car was new and the mileage alway stays within the ranges noted.

My 1989 560SEL gets the same, 15 around town, 18 to 19 on the highway, 75 MPH avg.

My 87 on new heads/fuel injection/gutted exhaust, no EGR, Air pump gave me almost 24 Once.. I could see 21-22 crusing down the highway like a normal person.. But I typically saw 17-19 on the highway, 15 ish around town.

Having had an '88 560SEC, an '87 560SEL, and my current vehicle a '91 560SEL, all of them have gotten identical fuel economy.
10 or 11 MPG city driving only 11 or 12 MPG mixed city/highway 16 or 17 MPG highway only That's it, proper tire pressure, everything operating perfectly, light on the acceleration, I have never gotten less than 10 and never more than 17. '91 560 SEL 89,000 '04 SL500 26,000

Fudge! There's an '86 near me that I could probably get for cheap. I noticed a thread in Vintage about 450 SEL fuel economy and they are just as bad. Two of those nearby for sale cheap. With RUG at $3.09, premium at $3.29, and diesel cresting over tree-fitty, I think I'll just stick to diesels. Would be nice to have a V-8 again though.

If you have to ask, you don't want to know
I get 9-11 city in mine, 17-19 freeway. 13-16 avg. Depends how I drive (if like Dear Ol' Dad or a jackass). Seems to me the 2nd gear start combined with the precat and huge main cat are the reasons for the poor economy of the M117 it's not able to breathe easily and struggles to move from a dead stop. Some time I'll toss in my regular M117 dual manifolds and the first gear box, just too many other projects to deal with now.

After spending some time driving a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder 4x4, with the thirsty VG33E V6 engine...A 560SEL seems darned economical.
Sorry to twist the subject a bit, fly into a gorge and tumble down the side, but I can't fathom how people afford these SUVs day by day. Back to the subject at hand. I got about 15 - 18 mpg in a 50/50 mix of city/highway with my 5.5 liter M117 guzzler.

SUV's aren't all bad. I used to get 25 in my lifted 2100 lb Suzuki Samurai. I'm told Ford Excursions with the 7.3 diesel get around 20 under a light foot.

One has a Geo motor, the other Diesel... unlike 98% out there with a gutless V8 or a poor performing V8.
