Replacing fuel tank - 87 300E
Been having a few misfiring issues lately, engine not firing cleanly. I know it's not the usual fuel injection woes because I've been there, fixed that. Plugs were soiled, but dry, so I cleaned them up and started thinking about mixture problems.
Starting with the basics, I removed and cleaned my fuel filter, which is less than a year old, and there was a whole bunch of water and corrosion that came out of it. Looks like I found the source of my problems. I plan to drop the fuel tank and clean it out at some point but I would consider changing it for the later plastic model, mainly because of the corrosion issue but also because it would have the newer baffle design around the outlet which would cure the misfiring when coming out of right hand turns with less than a 1/4 tank of gas. The design was changed in 1988 apparently. Before I do this, I would like to know in advance whether the original bits and pieces like the level sender, outlet pipe, etc would fit in the new tank or whether I would need to buy new parts. Can anyone shed light on this replacement procedure and whether the plastic tank drops right in?

Simmo300e,
Having a bad quality fuel, like us in Indonesia is a big problem. I just want to remind you about the small KE filter. It is a small nut like brass thing in the fuel pipeline just before entering the fuel distributor. It was threaded left, so to open you should turn it to the right. Check that too. Maybe there are sludge trapped in that thing. Bye. |

Hi Gunawan, you're right about the poor quality fuel in Indonesia, but hey, at least its cheap.
Thanks for the tip, I'd been told about the filters and now clean them every time I squirt the muck out the fuel lines, which is every couple of months. BTW, do you know any source of secondhand MB parts in Jakarta? I hear there's a market for bits shipped out from Singapore and I could really do with some interior trim.

Just a reminder that the V8s had a 90L tank that should fit fine. It does use more trunk space, but it would give you a greater range.

There are some secondhad parts seller, but the quality is "as is" you know, so better you see it for your self. My guess is you are looking for door trims, which is peeling away from the plastic curves. As for the seller, I still haven't find the big player for cut up cars from singapore yet. I still am looking.
