e 320 AC Compressor
Here we go again. First the sunroof went south on me, now the AC. The AC compressor doesn't appear to be engaging. Does anybody know if this could be a relay or a fuse, or am I in for a compressor? Thanks

The first step to diagnostics is to check the fuse then check the system pressure. You may have lost all refrigerant.

I appreciate the prompt reply. I checked the three fuse locations I am aware of, but could find no fuses relating to the AC system. I read something about a fusible link related to the compressor but I don't know where this link would be located. Any ideas? Thanks

The fusible link is a protection for the serpentine belt. It is at the A/C compressor ad is supposed to disengage the A/C compressor from the serpentine belt if the compressor seizes. This is to protect the belt.
As stated above, first step would be to check the charge on the system. If the system is low on refrigerent, the compressor will not be allowed to engage in order to protect it from damage. |
Thanks. I'll have the refrigerant checked. I'm able to move the hub on the front of the compressor by hand (engine off, of course) so I don't think it is siezed.

Doing a search will provide you with more information about this particular question than you ever wanted to know, but I will summarize the answer to your question for the 200th time.
Go to the low pressure switch on the receiver/dryer, remove the connector and with key on but engine off, short the pins in the connector. If you hear the clutch click, then the system is low on refrigerant. The more proper way to determine this is with gauges. The low pressure switch interrupts the clutch circuit in the event of an empty system to prevent compressor damage. Good luck, |
