Has anyone replaced the rubber boot's on the rear axle's of a 83 300D Turbo? How difficult is this? I looked at the manual and there appears to be an inner and outer on each end of each axle. These look like the boot's on the CV joint's of a front wheel drive. I just noticed some cracking while checking the rear brakes. There has not been any leaking. So if I can get them changed soon I should not have any problems with the joint's.

The original axles have the C/V joints assembled within a can that is crimped over with a large press fixture. We have done hundreds of them, but it can not be done without this special tool. Few shops have the tool.

That's what I figured after looking the manual. Thank's for the reply Steve. I may just have to wait on these. Thankfully they are not leaking. How expensive are the axles as a complete unit? I know with with CV joint's it has become cheaper to replace the entire axle in some cases.

You are correct shoe, I've always heard that
it's less expensive to buy good axles from a yard
and have them installed... for as long as that may last.
Although its nice to know that they can be pressed on
with the right tool.
I think a complete job with new parts is about $600.. ?

Ken,

Are you talking about deep cracks that go all the way through or just many very small cracks? These boots look sort of cracked with these many surface cracks even when the cars are relatively new. You're doing the right thing by keeping an eye on them and watching for leaks. When they start leaking take action soon, 'til then I would just keep an eye on them.

My 240D's boots have had the cracked look for years and have never been replaced, leaked or given trouble.

Good luck,

I have an 80 240D with the same problem. Here's what I've found out.

The boots are about $10-$15. It's the hassle of removing the "cans" that's the problem. Call around to some local shops that rebuild CV joints. Saw a post where they were able to get a local CV shop to install the new boots for $70 per shaft. The guy had to provide the boots and do the R&R on the shafts.

Another alternative is a split boot kit. I know this is heresy to some but have seen others say they work great. Suppose to be able to install without removing the shafts, but I think removing them is the easiest in the long run.

The best solution is to buy a used set, have new boots installed, remove the old ones, install the new ones, save the old ones for next time. This way you're back on the road in a day.
