Leak at Cam Adjust Magnet
 

Hi guys, I have two 1994 E420s with the same leak.

(caution, 1600x1200 picts)

HERE is one. You can see the leak toward the right hand side of the picture.

Once I remove the cam adjusting magnet, it looks like THIS .


Whats do I need to buy, and how do I fix this?

MB sells a sealant for this. Like an idiot, I bought a tube from the dealer ($60)! :eek:

Oh yeah, clean the excess residue first before applying the new sealant...

ah. so there isnt some rubber o-ring or gasket or something I have to replace, just use some over the counter high-temp silicone right there in between the cam magnet and where it sits. I dont have to take off that large nut. Just clean it all up....dosent sound too bad.

ther proper sealant is not silicone, i dont recommend silicone mainly because if it gets in the adjuster it can clog the oil passage preventing it from working, mercedes uses what they call a flange sealer, it is anerobic in nature similar to lock tight,i have some at work i will send you if you want it,but i will be off from work until the 17th of may, the mercedes part number for the sealant is 002-989-00-20, i would sugget you invest in a tube, ther amy be others here who need it, if it is that expensive you guys could pool your money.

is there any particular place to apply this flange sealent or just make a bead on the bottom of the cam magnet and press on?

apply a coat to the mounting surface on the front cover, applying it uniformly, after you bolt togeather torque to 10Nm, wipe excess from area,

Hi As you can see the oil is also on the connector i would pull back the jacket and make sure the oil did not travel thru,it can lead to other components and cause a check engine light among other problems.joeym

so we decided that the dealership is the only place that sells this flange sealent right?

oh and just to make sure, Should I, or Shouldn't I, clean out that area around the nut [the second picture] with like carb cleaner or something?

A Honda or Yamaha motorcycle dealer has a product used to seal their crankcase halves. Yamaha's product used to be called Yamabond - cheaper then MB's if I remember correctly. Aftermarket M/C shops may have a generic for less.
