Found a metal tag wedged under the drivers seat in my JUST AQUIRED 1986 300E -- It show the VIN # and several other numbers including 103983-12-040I91 is this the engine type and if yes is this the higher compression ratio and HP engine ?
ALSO on this tag is # WDB124030-IA-308340
Would very much appreciate if anybody would tell me what hese numbers mean because it could make it easier for me to order parts in the future.

That is your engine #, and is not the higher compression/HP version. The E320 (1994-1995) and 300E 2.8 (1993) are the only models with the more powerful engine.
