Windshield Chip
 

I have a small chip (pencil eraser size) in the windshield of my '02 CL 500. While insurance will pay to have it replaced or repaired, I would prefer to have it repaired and was wondering if anyone has first hand experience with this approach. I will go this route if it is virtually undetectable and is a lasting repair. I don't want a replacement unless necessary due to possible installation damage and the fact it will show up on carfax.

I had 2 chips in my windshield of my W201 and had them repaired. The repair prevented them from possibly spreading, but they were still very noticeable. That was my experience from teh place I had teh work done. I'm sure there are many places that do these repairs and maybe different technologies too. My W124 has a brand new windshield and I already have a chip. I just left it and if it spreads or causes any problems, I'm going to have it replaced. I'm really not concerned about selling my car or carfax so I don't really mind.

Is there anything that works for tiny little chips...
 

My soon to be 20 year windshield has numerous tiny little divits maybe the size of the tip of a ball point pen at the largest.
I am guessing nothing will hold in there... but hoping someone knows different.

Had a very small chip repaired on my 2000 E320 two or three years ago. The result was excellent and has not been a problem. An auto glass shop can advise on better approach, replace or repair.

If ins. pay for it, replace it ,why bother repairin' it??? :confused:

Hail did in my windshield which was 12 years old. What a difference in the clarity both day and night! Especially at night. If insurance will cover it go for it!

I think your much better off just having the chip repaired.
Who knows, you get a new windshield and a few days latter a new chip.

But the real issue with replacing a winshield is potential scratching of A-pillar and leakage issues.

With a high end car like a CL be prudent with the shop you use and don't let them talk you into a new windshield.

Once the chip is filled, at certain angles you can usually detect a discoloration or a slight difference of diffraction - but no big deal and usually not noticeable when driving.
