I have a 1984 280SEL (euro imp, 126 chassis) with the 110 6cyl and the 4spd automatic. The car has the original size tires and rims. It seems to shift from 1 to 2 at about 5 mph, 2 to 3 at 15 mph, etc... Just seems to shift rather quickly overall with 60 mph at about 3600 rpm, which seems rather high. It doesn't seem to be the torque converter slipping. Is this normal? Any thoughts? It's like having a 4:11 rear end in car with an engine that is built to only turn 4000 RPM. TIA. Hal

The rear end is supposed to be a 3.58/1 ratio. The trans shift timing is done with control pressure cable adjustment. Most EURO cars also have Sport/Normal switch on shifter to hold gears longer.

MB DOC, if the shifting is controlled by the control pressure cable then what does the normal/sport switch actually do to change the shifting? Is it electronic?
