My 83 300TD is drowning need help.

Hi Guys,

I searched the different forums here and yet I can't solve the problem of leaking water to the passenger behind the driver seat.

I temporarily covered the sunroof and the water is still pouring in.
Looked into the draining plugs yet I'm not sure that I got them all.
It is not leaking from the rear window as I removed the carpet to check.
Of course I removed the carpets out to dry out (I don't have the carpet there for more than 5 weeks now.

Upon removal of the cover of the beam that supports the left passenger door I couldn't find any leak from the beam. Today I found a nice little puddle in the back :-( (it's raining really heavily in Marin County). So I hade to find the source, I spent about an hour inside and I think that I know where the water is coming from, the problem is I don't know how to block it.

Under the passenger feet there is the plastic cover that covers the different vacuum hoses and electric cables. It seems as if the water is coming from the connector that secures the hoses to the left wall on the floor. I have no idea how to find how the water is getting there.

Could you please advice?

Thanks,
Yossi

yshahar,

I had the same exact problem with my '81 240D. My leak was found by spraying water at and around the exterior portion of the front windshield seal. Water was found trickling down behind the fwd l/h interior kick panel and subsequently found the fwd outer l/h side of the driver carpeting wet as well. The flooring is not level but tilted backward towards the passenger footwell compartment. Keeps your feet nice and dry, but not so nice for the passenger sitting behind you. I had a new windshield seal installed by an older gentleman who does all the glass work for the local MB dealer in my area. As a precaution, before he installed the new seal, a bead of glass sealer was layed in the frame making the initial installation a little messy. No leaks since this seal replaced. Hope my experience can help you. Please let us know if you get your leak resolved.

Brgds,

After trying everything under the sun to fix this I realize that replacement of the windshield gasket is the only solution...I have slowed the leak but it is still there. It only seems to leak when the car is not moving also....Does anyone have a source for this gasket...It seems the standard parts houses all don't seem to have it...

To fix the leaking windshield problem just get a tube of black silicone. Cut a small hole in the tip and lay a bead around the gasket. Just did that on the front back gaskets in one of mine and it works fine.

Also, if that doesn't cure the leak you may have a rusted drain hole underneath the battery. This allowed water to seep into the passenger compartment on mine and find its way into the back passenger area. Took some silicone and sealed that hole up as well.

Silicone is great stuff!

silicone + metal = rust. You can get the correct windshield gasket from the stealership- one item worth the $. If your windshield is fine, a mobile glass guy should be able to come to you and replace the gasket in under an hour. Shouldn't cost too much. Much cheaper than repairing rust later.

I've got the same exact thing right now, just looking for a deal on a windshield because mine is original and pitted and has one dime size chip. Might as well replace it while it is out.

Also, if you're going to have it replaced, you can cut the old windshield out and treat any rusted metal spots you find- someone wrote about this in a thread recently...

cheers,
Kevin

djgurba,

I have to respectfully disagree on your rust forumula. I've had silicone on one of mine for years and nary a speck of rust. Regardless, I sealed to the glass in order to stop my leaks.

Rust stoppers.

Dunno, when I searched that's what a lot of folks seemed to think... I'm not willing to experiment...
