Please verify dealer's "diagnosis"

2000 S500 had been dying a few times while driving. Check engine light didnt come on for the first few times, but eventually did. Now I'm told that the 'crankshaft sensor' is worn out, and needs to be replaced.

They are asking 530$. I've never heard of this, and I was hoping it was just a gas cap, O2, or MAF sensor.

Is this a common problem? What should I do?

Cool

Don't spend that much money!

That is a common failure for that car! BUT the part should have a list of $100 & labor should be around 1.5hr. at local rate!!

can anyone confirm this before i rip my dealer a new one?

what should the hr rate be? even if it's 100$/hr, thats 150$ for labor, and 100 for part. so they are charging me 2X!?

How can they think they can get away with it?

edit:
whoops- i just saw your signature... guess i dont need confirmation, then. But how should I confront them about this?

First call their parts dept & ask price for 003-153-27-28 OR 003-153-28-28! About $107 list price

Also ask what is the diagnostic FEE??, should be 1 hr or less!

Also suggest that MB labor operation 15-2133-M2 should be less than 0.5hr & that is what MB says they should charge for sensor replacemnet!!

Add that up & see if that comes to less than $300!!!!

Good luck!

someone should tell you how awesome you are! they told me 95$ diagnostics, but I thought that would go towards the repairs! gah!

When you said 1.5 hour labor, you were including the 1hr for Diag, and then the .5 for the sensor?

Thanks a lot!

so apparently they had to do an "electrical check" on the car, which was more extensive than the initial diagnosis. the check was 295$. WTF, never goin back there again!

Mercedes Benz of Knoxville is no different.

They charged me $266 for a .5 hrs check per Mercedes Service Manual! On top of that, their diagnosis was wrong.

And $109 for a fuel filter change!!

I am not going back there again either.

This is why I fix my own car? I can even aford to mess it all up and do it two or three times (or in your case 5.3 times) before I come close to what the dealer charges.

Whos the dealer?? You should reprint this and bring it to the dealership and see what they have to say, then complain to Management and then call the regional Mercedes rep.

Now I don't feel so bad about diagnosing by part replacement. Maybe not such a bad idea after all.

Many dealers do not do that type of OVER-charging for diagnosis.

I would ask very nicely to speak with FIRST the service manager, and if that doesn't resolve the problem, the General manager OR Owner!

Paying double the amount that should be charged is absurd! Be very firm but VERY nice.
