Make my own heat shield?

I have a 1992 BMW that has rotted out heat shields. I pulled one off (with my bare hands) and now the passenger footwell gets a little warmer than I would like. Anyone know about making up my own heat shield? I think that the factory only sell the whole exhaust. Can one make their own heat shield?

Don't see any reason why you cannot make one and pop-rivet or weld it to the exhaust. Should work fine. Go to a sheet metal shop with the old rotted piece and they can probably make you a replacement using the old piece as a cheap and nasty pattern. If they use galvanized metal it will be harder to weld.

Also, check out a custom car or street rod builder. There is some pretty neat foil covered heat insulation material hot rodders use that would work nicely if laid under your floor mats.

haeat sheild replacement?

I had the same on my 63 corvette. (fibreglass floor panels) no real efect. You can however pick up a sheet of thin aluminum and pop rivet or screw (metal threading screws) this panel across the floor pans ( one peice) and this will relfect most of exhaust jeat. (cheap and easy) good luck Abe G
