Dip stick reading
1989 300E
I seem to remember reading in the Star that said the difference between the top and bottom of the dip stick was 2 quarts of oil. Is that correct? I just added one quart and it seems to bring it from the top of the bottom red marker to near the bottom of the top red marker on the dipstick. Any comments? |
Yes, this is what I've alway heard as well, 2 quart operating range. maybe you added oil while it was still draining into the pan? Most MB's seem to take a long time for all the oil to drain down, 10-20 minutes.

It's actually two liters which is about 2.1 quarts, but it may not be linear between the marks.
The correct oil evel is measured with the car on a level surface a few minutes after shutting down a fully warmed up engine. Check it the next morning and it will be higher. Let it sit a few days and it will be yet higher. Duke |
krjt, my experience is that the distance between the red plastic markers equates to 1 quart. At oil changes I add enough oil to bring the level midway between the red markers ... adding a half quart will raise the level from the top of the lower red marker to the mid-point.

The M103 in mine takes 2 qts. to get from lower mark to top mark. |
Mike, I'm referring to a M104 in a 1991 and 1992 300CE.
