I have an 88 260e that recently developed the problem of dying when it hits 1000 rpm. It will not start unless you give it some gas pedal, and if you come to a stop sign and brake without keeping your foot on the gas, it dies. Otherwise, cruising down the interstate, it runs fine. I have replaced the fues filter so far, but since there doesn't seem to be a service manual for this car anywhere on earth, I'm not sure where to go from here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Darren

Could have a number of things , but it sounds like a big vacuum leak to me.

BTW your not looking very hard for manuals. PartsShop has the CD version which I would recommend.

I have a 380 SEC that same thing happened to me.

I replaced my idol control valve and idol control relay and it fixed it.

Steve,

I have heard that the cd manuals were a poor investment from several people. Are they pretty extensive? I got a popular mechanics cd (I know I shouldn't expect much) that just stinks. It has huge areas of missing information, and much of the information it does have seems to be aimed at someone that already has a solid understanding of MB mechanics. It there a procedure for locating a vaccume leak, or should I take it in somewhere for diagnostics?

Thanks for the reply!

Darren

I spend thousands every year for data systems alone, never mind books. This includes $2800 a year for MB WIS (Workshop Information System) alone. From my experience about half to 75% of what I have available on your car is available on the CD-Rom.

The CD covers Chassis manual, Electrical Troubleshooting Manual, Engine Manuals, Maintenance Manual, Owners manual, and Climate Control Manual. The other things I use are the Diagnostic Manuals (probably around $1-1.5k), service bulletins and diagnostic directory, New product manuals and parts info.

I have all the Chassis CD's but I use them seldomly as I also have the print manuals. I have heard many people claim that all the manuals aren't there, but I have found everything that I ever thought should be there. It's really hard to "flip" through the manual as one would with paper. I am very familiar with where things are in the manuals so I don't find the CDs that difficult. I presume they could be difficult without knowing the MB group system.

Depending on what has been done to your car, I would start with overvoltage relay. Also testing of the sensors involved in keeping the idle circuit steady. There is a decel shut-off switch, idle contact, speed sensor( same as cruise) & air flow position sensor! A good tech should be able to figure what is happening with these sensors. Most common failures are decel & air flow, but any can cause similar problems.
