Hey a friend has a 92 SL500 adn the steering has become very hard... I know it could be the pump but we wanna see if it has the right amount of fluid first... where do i find it?? can you gusy give me a procedure for flushing the system???

The reservoir is right above the pump. Just unscrew the black nut and take off top of the reservoir.
I've never had a problem with these pumps. I'm not too sure how to flush it properly. I am guessing that there is a plug or you disconnect one of the hoses. As for bleeding, just turn the steering wheel all the way to one side a few times. Did you check for leaks?

These will self bleed. It is OK to fill about 5 mm-10mm over the fill mark on the plastic insert. This will allow for trapped air.

hey.. i found where the P/S pump reservoir is.. my question is... after the removal of the black nut can i directly poor the fluid in or do i remove jsut he top cover of the cylinder shaped reservoir???


oh and because i have a 03 w140 300se.. can i use the diagram from the popular mech. cd for the water pump for the SL500??? I guess what i am asking is if the pumps used in both cars the same...

To add power steering fluid, remove the black plastic nut and then the fluid reservoir's metal cover.

If the vehicle is exhibiting chronic PS fluid loss, inspect the pump supply hose coming from the fluid reservoir. M-B issued a Service Information bulletin regarding the M119 PS system; apparently incorrect length hose was used during assembly, which left the fluid delivery system prone to leaks. Repair involves removing the fluid reservoir and renewing the hose, reservoir base gasket and a couple of seal rings.

The PS pump on this engine is also prone to leaking over time. Factory reman pumps are available (but expensive).

The V-8 M119 uses a different water pump than the I-6 M103.
