380 SL "smoky and the bandit"

Took the conv out and to my surprise, it smokes randomly. Sometimes after sitting at a stop light for a minute or so, you take off and a pretty big blue cloud is left behind. I also found out that the idle controller is messed up and most of the time if it adles at 1k or 1.5 k the smoking issue does not appear.
When it idles at 600 it tends to smoke.
Suggestions for the cause? I am not sure what it is.
Sometimes you fire the car up and ther's no smoke at all, other times it smokes.
Love the car, what a beatiful and comfortable vehicle. Everyone should have a SL.

Sounds like you need to replace the valve stems/guides, etc. A very common repair item.

If you want to wait on the valve guides, try using syntectic oil. It takes a short while and you may have to change it twice to get out all the dino oil. I tried a no name syn and there was a small amount of whitesh smoke. Went to Mobil One 15-50 . No more smoke and it fixed the valve guide seals, which were only dried out.Got this from an old timer after i had the heads off.Tried it a few times and works very well. It has fixed both cars.Fix's dried seals, but if your seals are torn or cracked then it can leak more. Most cars only have dried out seals.
Good Luck
Rich
