Centre brake light
1997 C230
Car running A-OK... I get a "light-out" indicator on the cockpit display > run a diagnostic and determine that my center brake light bulb is kaput. I purchase a new bulb at the local Benz dealer [$20!!!!! for a freaking brake light bulb!!! what is it > these bulbs specced for the space shuttle??] anyway > I install the bulb > indicator light goes off > I'm thinking all is well But NO!!! first time I apply the brakes > indicator light is back on... what gives??? |
Another one could be out, I usually replace both. I cant believe $20 was that installed?

I couldn't believe it either >> $20 for a little bulb... I installed it...
The parts guy at the MB shop said that it's probablly a hollogen bulb >> I handled it gingerly, no touching it directly [no fingerprints on the glass]... I'm going to take a test meter to the bulb connection ponts this afternoon.. see what I get... |

call your local autoparts store and see if they have it. I would check all 3 brake lights to make sure they all work. |
I've had similar situation on our 1997 C230 where the third brake light was out. I'd say it happens about twice a year. The first time, even though the old bulb did not look burned out, I replaced it with a new one. Same light out indicator a few months later. I removed the bulb, cleaned the electrical contact area, and put it back in. All was well. I think the electrical contact area gets dirty and trips the bulb out warning light. Good luck.

I often have the same problem 2x/ yr, finally after 1 X $25.00 (in the northwest) I checked on the contacts and the housing, try bending the part w/c contacts the bulb terminals. This should fix the problem.
