I think capacity with a filter changes is around 6.3 quarts. When I change the oil I put in 6 quarts. This is for a 86 300E.
2003 Volkswagen Golf GL 24,000 miles. 1.9L I-4 TDI 5spd.

1986 300E. 115,000+ miles. 3.0L I-6 1st daily ride, around town only. (Gone)

I put 6.5 in my '88 300E after draining oil AND filter. This brings it exactly to the full mark.

Good luck,
