R-12 Where to find it?

Go to www.imaca.org and spend $15 and a few hours to take an open book test online. You will then download a printable certificate that you can use to buy R12 without violating Federal law.

You then can go to any number of sites and buy it so that you KNOW that it is the real thing. I buy from www.refrigerantsales.com.

R12 is coming down in price while 134 is going up, so it is now, more than ever, the time to stick with it for the cars designed to take it.

Good luck,

The refrigerantsales.com site Larry mentioned has as good a price as any I've seen.

Beware though.

You may live in an area that requires more than just a 609 cert. to buy R-12. There are states, municipalities that will only allow the sale of R-12 to shops/techs/etc. and not guys with a card in their wallet.

I'd call the refrigerantsales.com place first and see if they're able to ship to "individuals" in SF before embarking on the EPA test.

LarryBible 06-08-2005 12:24 PM

That's why I was specific in saying that the 609 would allow you to buy it without violating FEDERAL law.

Good luck,

R12

we get ours from a vendor here in san diego, they are griffins a/c service, telephone number is 619-234-7995 it sells for $700.00 for a 30 pound bottle ask for Junior, we have not had any problems with freon from them, whe use an identifier to check for other than R12 being in the bottle, and have found nothing out of the ordinary.

I took the test from the place Larry Bible recommended. I printed the study guide, read it two times and took the test. It was very easy and when I wasn't sure of the answer I could just go back and look at the relevant section in the study guide.

I recieved by paperwork from that company in about 2 or 3 days.

Edited:

I did not download the certificate after taking the test because you had to give them your social securtiy number for that and there was no way I would do that. However, as I indicated above they send you your certificate and the wallet card very quickly.

I did the same at EPA Test. Also easy, also quick with the paperwork. Probably very similar sites. Either one is a good education just to read the free sutdy guides. Only the test costs $.

OK, I got the part about having a certificate to buy R12 from a dealer/distributor...
Do the same rules cover private party sales?

I've got a brand new 30# cylinder of R12 in my garage I'd like to get rid of at a reasonable price if it can be done legally. Still has the factory seal on it. Bought it years ago when R12 was pretty cheap and widely available. Also, have a new case of small cans hanging around somewhere here...
I'm in Northern VA.

Ken:

You could sell it to anyone, licensed or not, but if the buyer happened to be associated with the EPA, you could be fined $10,000.00 and go to a federal prison for 2 years.

The $$$ and time in the brig I mentioned were brought up in the 609 test I took 7-8 years ago. That may have since changed, but it would be my guess that it hasn't slackened off.

Have the buyer mail or fax a copy of their 609 + drivers license to you.

With your advertisement out now, I suspect you'll receive a lot of private msgs/emails from people in your area.
