My Chilton guide doesn't go into the details---rear wheel bearing replacement: What parts do I need and what are the details? Looks like I have to unbolt the flange from the axle and remove. Then, draw out the bearing? Seems simple but, it IS a Benz and my personal logic doesn't necessarily hold. Is the inner or outer race pressed or slip-fit? Could we innocently expect it to be that easy? And, can all that stress be handled by that one bearing??? Thanks in advance. Steve

Not that easy!! 2 bearings pressed on flange & a crush sleeve between them that HAS to be done properly, or new bearings will fail! NOT a diyer. Bearings are to be set-up with dial indicator.

Believe the Doc, this is one you don't want to do. If you really want to do it, find a used control arm and replace the whole thing.
The biggest problem is that you will need a special socket to remove and install the huge inner nut. Also you will need a special holding fixture or reasonable fact simile. There also can be some real technique needed to get the crush washer to crush even with the special tools. I have pulled the threads out of at least 4 nuts over the years trying to compress the crush washer. I currently smack (that is a special hammer term to pecisely describe the force level) the crush washer on one side to start the deformation. |
No offense to Doc intended and I thank you both for the effort to enlighten. I'll look into replacing with a whole rear. That will get me away from all the other whines etc. Thanks again. Steve
