126 Transmission Rebuild

My 119,000 mile '89 560SEL has suddenly developed a loud whine from the transmission. It still works, but I'm assuming not for long.

Does anyone have advice on rebuilding this transmission?

126 Trans rebuild

I have an 88 300 SEL and I asked the dealer for some techical info regarding the trans. I was told that the dealers do not repair these units, they replace them with factory rebuilt units. The shop manual only provides a limited amount of info on the trans. tyical of the 126 chassis. There are a number of shops on the internet that offer rebuilt units. If you purchase one from Mercedes you are looking at $2,000-$2,500 excluding installation.

Do you change the fluid and filter every 30K mi.? If I were you, I would drop the pan and see if anything has accumulated in the bottom. The fluid should be a bright red even after 30K mi.

No takers on this question?

Has anyone rebuilt their own transmission?

There is a very good and detailed thread here of the forum about rebuilding a transmission. I cannot remember the authors name - but it will eventually come to me

I don't know if this is the one you mean... but it's full of good resources.

I haven't quite done it yet but I may well tackle rebuilding the "spare" 722.315 I have for my wife's 300D.

I "peered into the abyss" on the 722.120 that is going into the 300SD. I had the front half apart but didn't get into the gears/clutches/bands/ etc as it only had 125k mi on it (bad front pump). I think I can do a fairly complete rebuild on one. I rebuilt a Ford C-4 once

At the rate I work , it should take me a year or two. How much time do you have?

$1,500 for a rebuilt trans + maybe 2 hours labor to swap them out.

Don't forget a rebuilt torque converter and new trans mount, another $350 or so.

Thankyou! That thread has just the information I need. However it looks like TransOnline is no longer accepting new members, and I'm not sure how to get the ASTG manual mentioned.

Is factory rebuilt considered reman. ? Do they go through all the hard parts and replace any that don't meet spec?

Just do a search on the mercedes 722.315 transmission. I am sure it will come up on ebay or the 'net. The factory manual will probably be better. The 722.1xx ATSG manual is absolute garbage- the 722.3xx one looks better but I haven't actually tried to use it yet.
