Red face Brakes come and go

1992 190E 2.6 (201,000 miles)

About once a day the brake peddle travels very near the floor.

I slightly panic, pump the brakes and all is well the rest of the day.

The brake reservoir is full, with no leaks on the parking lot. Brake calibers are dry.

Obviously something is wrong - please provide your suggestions

I'm guessing the Master Cylinder is leaking or something.

About 2,000 miles ago I replaced the front pads and rotor, pushed the piston in and such.

Thanks for the help.

Sounds like an internal leak in the master cylinder.

The seals on the pistons in the master cylinder are worn out. Rebuild or replace the master cylinder pronto, as sooner or later it won't pump up.

Like Peter said >> seals on the master cylinder are worn out >> you won't get any external indication of "leaking" >> as the leaking is happening inside the cylinder >> but you won't be generating any brake pressure either >>

Try "loosing" your brakes on the Wash Beltway at rush-hour... a real adrenaline producing event!!

Bill,
You're not actually driving this car, are you?

If so, stop driving the car until you get it fixed!

The risk is simply not worth it -- risk to you, risk to others around you...

Smile Thanks for the suggestions

The car is off the road - until a new master is installed.

Guess I just have to drive the convertable on these sunny days.

Thanks for the feedback

Thanks for the help - Easy job

With your suggestion - I replaced the master brake cylendar.

Besides making the car safer - it was an easy "fun" task - all work with master done in engin compart, ment - and simplly changed the brake fluid.

It was actually an easy job.

Thanks
