Hi,

Thanks for providing this forum!

I just got a '96 C220 a couple months ago. Runs great, but tonight, the car was sitting in the driveway, and after several hours in below-50 temperature, the fans started running all by themselves.

I called the 800 number for Mercedes, and the tech that got on the line couldn't help, so I pulled the fuse for the fans.

I usually do most minor repairs myself, but I'm new to Mercedes. Is this something that's relatively simple, like a bad sensor or relay, or will this cost me a bundle at the dealership?

Thanks.

Would have to be a bad relay. A/C & engine cooling fan ?? there is a PULSE relay mounted to the left frame rail behind plastic inner liner. Remove the lt. front wheel.

Thank you!

I'll take a look as soon as it stops raining!

Just a quick question...

It is the cooling fan, the ones mounted in front of the radiator.

Once I have the left front wheel off, do I need to remove anything else in the wheel well to get to this relay? Will it be fairly obvious or are there more than this one relay?

Thanks again - anything to get me in and out quicker! :)

It's a computer

Phillip,
It's behind the plasitc frame rail cover, MOUNTED upside down & electrical connector at top allowing water to enter w/raining. About 5" X 6", aluminum finned case.

M.B.Doc,

I found it! I think. I took off the plastic liner that is on the wheel well to the front of the wheel, that spans from the fender to the rail. Behind this liner was a box that was mounted to the wall, but it's not quite that big (about 2 x 3) and doesn't seem to have aluminum heat fins.

The connector's a large oblong thing (about 1-1/2" long) with the wires all in a single row, and the connector was on the flat side, facing me.

Is this it? Does MercedesShop carry this? Is the service CD available to me for my car?

Thanks.

M.D.Doc,

Wasn't sure if you saw my last post on this...

Have I got the right part?

Thanks again...

Should be the only item on that rail, oval plug. Try disconnecting & draining water from it.
PART # 016-545-96-32 & list price is $149. I re-mount with wiring pointed down!! WHERE possible.
