Question what are these relays for?

on my 1984 190e 2.3l there are two relays behind the battery. I know one is the load reduction relay that controls the k-jettronic and the idle stabalizer, but what does the other small relay control? the problem I am chasing is a rich fuel mixture. By unplugging the eha valve I can get it to run until it warms up and the plug in the eha while running if the coolant sensor is unplugged, then reconnect coolant sensor, runs good after that. Now back to the question, It did stall while idling a few times, when it did the relay behind the battery was clicking, when I moved it around it stopped (like a poor connection). this car has sat for a few years and the more i run it the more things start working( like the windows, clutch fan, ect.) any help would be greatly helpful. I am an ase mechanic with many years on audi but am still learning on the benz. I want to start driving this car soon. thanks again.
Joe

One of the relays (OVP) has a clamping zener in it to prevent overvoltage to the ECU, but the relay itself probably causes more problems than the benefit of the protection it offers. Cold solder joints internally due to poor assembly and design of the part are a major problem. Intermittent contact inside can cause a whole slew of bewildering problems without a 'hard' failure. If you can get the case off, it is worth trying to fix it. I have found they then often work better than a new one off the shelf. There may be a fuse on top to id it.

does anyone know what the smaller relay(without fuse) controls. the engine stalls when it is moved causing it to break the circuit or pull one of the pins out of the panel

Can you get a photo of it?
It sounds like you are describing the fuel pump relay, should have an RPM listed on it if it is, it is larger than the OVP though......
