1992 300E, Sportline, Red. How rare?
I have a 1992 300E, Sportline, Red.
Does any one have any idea how to find out how many of this car could have been sold in US? Has anyone seen another red in US? I have had this car 9 years now, and have seen very few Sportlines (maybe only 7-8 in all these years. And, NEVER another RED one. I certainly doubt it means that it is more valuable...but would love to get some stats on it's rarity. The only other red one that I have seen was on the web a few years ago...and was in Europe somewhere. |

Sorry, I had posted this before...few years ago
Found my old message where I posted same question a few years ago (under forgotten ID). Still have the car, still haven't seen another. And, even in Atlanta see very very few Sportline's ......maybe one per year.

great find...but not a sportline
Wow, great find. Never seen a red 500e either...but still not a sportline. This is strikingly similar to my red 300e sportline. My sportline does have the 2-tone red paint, unlike this 500e. Still, a beautiful car. Makes me appreciate mine even more after seeing another so similar.

sorry for my confusion, but what specifically makes your model a "sport line?" I have a friend in nebraska with an early 90's signal red 400e and my brother just bought an 89 300ce signal red but I have never heard of the "sportline"

What makes a sportline...
Sportline is a special labelled package that was produced in 90-92 or 93. If you go to "Cars" tab on top of this site, they have a great detailed list of the options. Basically, tighter suspension, lower stance, wider tires/wheels, tighter steering, extra burl wood interior, true buckets in rear (no bench), and the "sportline" logo all around. Very rare.

Is all the seating in your sportline identical to that in the 500E? I looked at a Sportline listing on Ebay before, and the seats looked just like thos ein a 500E. I love those seats, and will be looking for a long tiome to get a pair for the front.

What difference does it make?
Aldedmon, a poster here on mshop, has the most beautiful, most perfectly kept 500E on the planet and it happens to be bright red. I'm sure that he would tell you that just because it is rare because it is red, makes it no different than any OTHER 500E. Have a great day, |

sedan
Mine is the sedan. The few that I have seen over the years in Atlanta have all been sedans. Never see a sportline coupe?

There were sportline coupes all the way up to '95.
In fact, most of the sporline's I've seen have been coupes. I think the sedan is pretty uncommon.

I thought all 500E were in effect sportline since they all have rear bucket seats etc.

Are you kidding? The 500E is so far and away different from a Sportline 124 they might as well be made by different manufacturers and almost are. The 500E, as I recall reading somewhere, was assembled in a Porsche plant.
The 500E is a four door Porsche. Have a great day, |

Umm, the signal red 500e is indeed one of the rarest 500E's, production figures are around 20 or so (+/-) for the US.
The seats are made by Recaro and are from the Sportline W124. The Sportline package consisted of 1. Smaller diamater steering wheel (also used in the 500E) 2. Different shocks/springs (not the same as the 500E) 3. Wider diamater wheels/tires (not the same as the 500E) 4. Sportline shifter and front fender emblems (not available on the 500E) 5. Sport bolstered front seats and two place seating in the rear (same as 500E) No engine/transmission/differential changes from the non-sportline optioned model. A sportline package was never offered for the 500E, although the 1995 Ltd had a few changes and of course the AMG E60 version of the 500E had a highly modified suspension plus a 6.0 ltr motor. |
