Dash guages stopped & car won't start

All,
Hoping someone can point me in the correct direction here. My problem happened yesterday 94 degrees out in MN (yep it does get warm here too). Driving as normal and dash pod guages all dropped out like the car was turned off. ASR light came on. Everything else worked as normal. Car ran fine and was not in limp mode. I do have traction controll defeat option and that is always in deactivate ASR mode. Pulled in driveway and turned car off to cycle ignition and see if might fix itself (OK, that was optimistic). When I tried to start the car nothing happens. THe lights come on and the fuel pump runs, but when turn to engage starter not even a click. Made sure car was in park etc. Battery is fine, headlights bright, fuses all OK. Opened hood and seemed could smell burnt wiring by ABS unit on front drivers side wiring. Couldn't find exact location smell coming from.

So, is this a wiring harness problem? It seemed different than all the other threads as the car still ran OK and no one mentioned the dash guages dropping out. Any ideas of what to look for would be appreciated! If it is the harness which one would it be?

Thanks again for the help. I love the car, but this one has me stranded!

I'm guessing this is on you E500, I would double check the fuses, I thought that mine were good when my gauges were out and it turned out that one was bad. I would also try to find the burnt wiring as that is likely the cluprit.
