acceptable gear shift travel, w113

The gearshift lever in my 1964 230sl has approximately 1 inch of fore-aft travel when I hit a bump in the road. It looks wrong, but I don't know what it normal. Gear box is tight (gears engage properly, stay engaged, no synchro probs.), linkage bushings and motor mounts all good (replaced 10,000 miles ago). Don't recall if I renewed the transmission mount at the same time and I know the subframe bushings are all original (130,000 miles, 41 years old). Has any one a suggestion?

Also, please accept my thanks to this board's contributors. You guys have helped me sort out a couple of issues that have made my MB ownership even that much more enjoyable, thanks,

greg

I'd have to venture a guess that new sub frame mounts and tranny mount are in order...possibly even another set of motor mounts too.

Where to start with subframe bushings, W113

Mike, I suspect you are right. However, I have some fear about getting too deep in the suspension, as I don't have special tools that I expect I would need for bushing extraction and fitting. Is there a simple place to start? I can get the transmission mount with no problem, but what next?

Thanks,
g

Common spot on 113 linkage is the shifting fork on the splined shaft gets loose at the clamping bolt.
If all other link bushings are OK , look right there first.

A picture will help in locating
Go to this great 113 site and open the tranny link insert , then look at item
# 26 ..that is the fork that can loosen and cause you a problem like you mention.

Thanks, Arthur, what a great link!

That really helps, I will let the board know what I find for solution...with any luck. Appreciate the link, have you ordered parts from this vendor? They have some stuff that I have not been able to get through MBUSA, such as a complete gas pedal. And the price looks reasonable too.

Appreciate the advice,

g

I get most 113 parts here in US, but they have some of the smaller parts for rebuilding components , so that makes it worth dealing with them.
I have 113 and 121 cars, so I have had good luck there.
