83 240D 4spd shift linkage problem

The 1 2 selector at the tranny has a lot of play like the shift fork is worn out or there used to be a bushing on it possable lose linkage inside trans? Has any one had one apart do you need a jig like a volkswagon.

VW transmission jig, that brings back old memories. I remember the first one I did, installed it back into the car and it jumped out of second gear. I though I could adjust the sliding forks by eye.

I removed that transmission 3 times before I go right. After that eye opening experience I bought a used transmission case and made I own jig

If you can not find a fork, use a brass brazing rod to build up the worn spots on the fork. Grind it until you have a perfect fit. I still have cars out there running strong with my custom made forks.
