New MB owner 1984 230C rear suspension

Hi All,

Just joined the forum today.
I'm the resent purchaser of a 1984 230C Mercedes.
I'm a bit of a backyard mechanic and I couldn't pass up the deal I got on this car for the kids to use. It had 208,000 km and was otherwise in great shape for its age. The only thing really wrong was the load leveling system.
Car only cost $1000 and has run beautifully the couple of months we've had it.

I've skimed through the archives and as to be expected this suspension system works well for the first 10-15 years but is expensive to repair afterwards(guess you could say that for practically anything).

So the question is,... is there an after market coil and shock absorber that you could fit in place of the hydraulic strut that would give the car an average better attitude to the rear end?
As of right now, the back end sags a bit and is O.K. shock wise, the car still rides well, so I think the accumulators are probably doing their job.
The previous owner must have had price shock about the repairs and had the hydraulic pump chopped off it would appear.

I've been watching E-bay for salvage Hydraulic pump but not much there.
I won't be buying a new one since they are asking more than half the price of the car for one. I'll put $200 into it if I know I can get good results otherwise the kids will have to live with it since most of the time there are just two people in it.

Sure a nice car for 20years old!!!

Thanks,

Trev.

Exclamation

Doubt if the pump is the problem! NEVER replaced on in 30 years!

Bet the problem is $$$$$$$$ ! Rear leveling shocks & air cells (accumulators) are $$$. Cheaper to convert to regular suspension. IF the car is too low in the rear simply get rear springs from a regular sedan or coupe that weren't designed for leveling systems!
