I have a Autocraft battery that I got for $38 with my old battery exchange. When I bought that battery I was quite surprised to see how large it was and to see that it was 930CCA, Does a mercedes need this much juice to get it going? My dad made a joke about it when he saw it he said "hell if you break down you could use the starter to drive home with that battery".

Batteries Bateries

I have just bought a new battery for my 300 sel. After a lot of thought of "should I or should I not" buy a genuine Mercedes battery, I did buy a Mercedes battery. Anyway glad I did. I had a Interstate HD battery that is appx. 28 months old. The replace cost was a $100.00 cdn. The Benz battery was $165.00 cdn. The Benz battery is at least 5 in longer and 1' wider. I don't know but it has been in my experience that in most cases bigger is better. Besides when I open the hood that white battery with the blue star is looking up at me saying "quality" That is why we buy Mercedes in the first place. That battery comes from Germany just like the car. Spend the extra few bucks and get the proper stuff, or buy a domestic car.
Thanks

Upon moving back to Wilmington (NC), my battery died on my 83 300D. A friend of mine that has a Suburban (American Diesel) recommended a place that builds alternators and carries batteries. I bought one and WOW! It's a DEKA and is circa $75. I liked it so much that I bought one for my 76SLC. (different cranking amps for gas). An import shop killed it while putting in a motor for the windshield wipers (a long story that I won't bore you with) and when the guy jumped me.. or in reality, the battery.. I was "hot" and asked about recharging it. He said, "you have the best battery made today". He was possibly right. I drove a few miles, it recharged.. I have never had a battery.. for diesel engines or gas, that cranks so fast, especially on cold mornings. Try a DEKA.. just my 2 cents worth.

Just replaced my battery with an Advance Auto battery. The old one lasted 58 months of a 60 month warranty. The battery ran approx $60 less the prorated warranty allowance. I've had 3 Advance Auto batteries over the 14 year life of this car and have been very satisfied with each. They check it out for you and install for no charge.

Battery Life?

I took delivery of my 1987 300E on January 8,1988 and as it was new it had a M/B Battery. My records showed it lasted until September 9,1993 and was replaced by an InterState MB88. This batery lasted until, the reciept is in the glove compartment, 1998; this battery was defective and replaced after 5 years service, no charge year 2000. This tells me both batteries are good if taken care of. Price shop, but don't include the Diehard battery. I hope I have the dates right. Happy Trails Beep Beep from Houston.

Check battery with voltmeter, if it is on the low side. Recharge it with battery charger. Make sure there is enough watter in all cells. I saw something at Pep Boys, so battery Rejuvenator liquid for about less than$5. You could try that. It may make your battery last longer. I think it is just battery acid. It is worth a look. I remember when I had a OEM Varta battery. I bought this stuff(powder) that this guy in UK sold. It was put in each cell in equal amounts. It prevented desulphacation and supposedly made the battery last longer. Never knew if it worked. My car was stolen about 3 months later.

Squeeze in the biggest batt poss.

Some nice previous owner of my 2-litre petrol (gas) 190E kindly fitted a huge diesel type battery, which just fits in. Two years down the line after buying the car at auction and no worries so far.

In my old '70 Minor Traveller's large battery bay (designed for the old type black 'rubber' batteries, I squeezed a nice big Mazda 626 battery. The little piddly new batteries die after only a year or two I find - keep your guarantee card in a safe place if you buy one cos you'll probably be needing it...

The Best with the Most

I don't see the reasonning about the one item that effects so much of our beloved Benz as the Battery. It lasts 60 months and pro rated how much is that per month, you figure it. Put your concern to rest, get the largest capacity(1,000,000 CCA and 999,999 reserve amps). Take care of it and you wont loose. As for testing your battery with a volt meter, save your effort. Use a hydrometer!(it's cheaper too). In closing the El Katuna has these remarks,"BIGGER IS BETTER". Happy Trails Beep Beep from fully charged Houston.

Ive never put Mercedes batteries in any of my old benz's. Fot the W123 diesel, never pay more than $125 for one. As for best batteries! Do i have one for you all to top! My first car a 1980 Bonneville Diesel, had two batteries and they lasted 13 years! THIS was no small engine to crank over either, a 5.7 V8. And this was through several winters. My presently owned 77 Caddy Seville factory installed with the first maintenance-free battery in a car lasted 16 years!

A Good GM Fan.

Being a grad from GMI and retired after 20+ years, your tail of the two batteries, warmed the Cotter Pins of My Heart. Happy Trails Beep Beep from Houston.

Batteries

Living close to San Jose, CA, I'm lucky in that there is a battery rebuilder in town. Yes, thats right, they rebuild batteries. Costs about $24.95 for a big diesel battery and they last for 4 or 5 years. When you have 5 or 6 cars like I do, it adds up. (2 MBZ) Only a 30 day warranty, but it is either going to work or not. I have had excellent luck with them over the years - never a dud. A handy item to have is a battery checker that will put a load on the battery when testing voltage. I occasionally test my batteries and when I find them low, give them a charge and, if they don't come up to spec., replace them as you know they are on the way out.

4/07 Alas, the San Jose rebuilder is now out of business. Perhaps a victim of the environmental movement or perhaps the old boy just got tired of it.
A pity!

When I was a student at GMI, one of my work periods was at AC DELCO Batteries. I not only was trained in the design, manufacturing but also rebuilding batteries. About 75% of those rebuilt had nothing more than the electrolyte changed and the case washed clean of the sediment that shorted the plates at the bottom. The batteries of that era had asphalt tar type material as a top seal. We used heated air to melt and flow the top to look as new. These batteries were then returned to other GM facilities and returned to service. I've seen batteries being rebuilt 15 times and many years. Of course 12 volt was coming on in 1953(I think), so most everything was 6 volt. We did have a high number of 8 volters. Bringing back memories. Happy Trails Beep Beep from Houston.

FWIW the original Bosch battery in my 325e lasted 10 years. I replaced it with a BMW battery ($140, made by Exide, I believe), which has lasted 5 years so far. A German made Bosch battery I bought ($90) for my 2002 was 8 years old and perfectly good when a moron (installing an air conditioning condenser) drove a sheet metal screw through it and the acid leaked out. But on a strictly cost-per-year basis, a regular Exide from Kmart must be the least expensive. About $40 when on sale, and they last 4 years. The trouble is if the installation requires a ventilation hose (such as on a 325e), generic batteries may not have a hose attachment point, so you're foced to buy a purpose-made battery.
