I have an '82 240D. I want to change the power steering fluid and I've checked in the owners manual and it says the system requires automatic transmission fluid. My question is what type of ATF? There are several types of ATF fluid like dexron, and others. Any suggestions? Thanks

been discussed

The latest dexron ( type 3?)or u can use
OEM power steering oil from dealer.
Do a search for discussions in the past (alot).
For no worries just shell out for the MBZ
stuff.

Use Dexron III/Mercon. But only in these older types. Some of the newer systems require special MB fluid, but the old dieses can be run perfectly fine on DexIII

NONE!!!!!!

The latest ATF's have additives that are not good for the seals in your power steering. Simply go to the auto parts store and buy a few quarts of what is labeled "Power Steering Fluid". It's more expensive than ATF, but much less expensive than a pump. Been there, done that!

If you really want to be safe, buy Power Steering Fluid at your dealer, but I really believe the generic stuff is fine. These components are expensive, don't take chances.

Good luck,
