Keys locked in, slim jim avail, but.....?
 

The wife locked the keys in the car for the 2 time in three weeks. I told her I would sell the car and buy her a moped if it happens again.

I have a coat hanger thru the window and can get on the lock, but slips off !
I have a slim jim (next door cop) but can't hook the lock pin....anyone have any idea where I should be trying to locate the pin?

This is on a 1995 w124.....thanx for anything

call the MB roadside tech, theyre taught to open just about all the models with the keys locked inside.

or if you can wait a few days, order another key from your dealer (might be a good idea to do this anyways...)

I can give you details on how to gain entry, but I’m not sure if it would be a good idea posting this information.

Well, here is the new rule for Mercedes Roadside service......If you are more then 40 miles from a dealer.....they make phone calls to your local area trying to find someone to come an open the car...for whatever they charge....

We had a quote of $120 and then everyone else said..Mercedes...no thanks

And then the bad part about ordering the key....I have to drive an hour to show them my drivers license before they will order the key....then it comes in over night and I drive another hour....so 4 hours of driving to get a $28 key.

Did I mention that my wife has wrecked 6 out of 7 cars that she has owned ! :eek:

I wonder if they'd drop it in the mail to you if you provided SASE when you placed the order? My local dealer is not so far away, but I was rather surprised that they couldn't place a parts order over the phone. Required payment up front an in person. :wtf: Ain't none of you Benz-drivers trustworthy?

Buy her next car from an impound lot auction.....untill she learns how to drive don't spend more than $100 for a car. I can say that becasue she can't rip off my family jewels.

You only need to make the drive once. Explain your situation to them. Ask them to order the key using the VIN you supply over the phone. Tell them that you'll provide your proof of ownership (title/registration/license... what ever they require) when you come in to pick up the key. They'll probably insist that you pay for it in advance with a credit card. (If they're still unwilling, then fax them the proof of ownership when you order, and back it up with the original document(s) when you come in. These guys really need to work on their problem solving skills!)

If it were me, I'd order two... in fact that's exactly what I did when I bought my Benz. I refuse to own any vehicle for which I have fewer than 3 keys: One for me, one for my wife, and one extra that hangs on the hook at home. That way when we have to change cars (for maintenance, etc.) neither of us accidentally drives off leaving the other stranded. Another benefit: since we both have keys to all three vehicles, if she locks her keys in one of the cars, I only have to drive to where she is to use my key to bail her out -- I don't have to drive home first to get the proper key.

In my humble opinion, it's $28 well spent.

I locked my keys in my car quite a few times, even with it running, that was an ordeal. The poor thing ran out of gas while we tried to unlock it. I know, really stupid, but it was dead week, I was really sleepy. I will say that ever since MB came out with the remote control I have never locked my keys in my car since. You could look into an alarm system with remote locking, this would give you an insurance discount (some states) protect your car and valueables, and reduce the likelihood of locking the key in the car. More than a $28 key, but the alarms are pretty cheap now. Good luck!

It's a 95' E320 with a third party keyles entry, auto start and alarm......the problem is that SHE turned the key to the 2 position to close the windows...

Then, shutting the door, automatically locks because the car thinks that you are inside with it started.

Real bummer.....

If that were my car, disabling this auto-locking "feature" would have been job-one when I bought it. Talk about a useless system that adds needless complexity.

The more I learn about so-called "advances" in automobile technology, the more I like my '92 201.

That is the first feature I learn how to disable on any new (or old car) I get. A short story about that: I lived in Houston and kept a sailboat at Seabrook. A hurricane was coming in. I drove my wife's new van down to the dock to pull the boat out. I drove into the lot, put the car in park, shut off the engine and jumped out of the van, pushing the door closed behind me as I walked toward the boat. I heard the ominous click and horn beep behind me. Try getting some assistance with a hurricane coming. By the time I got my wife on the phone to drive down with the spare key, water was 4" deep in the parking lot. Lesson learned.

My gosh, that is scary, a hurricane coming and the keys locked in the car. I hope you got your sail boat out. Glad you are ok.

Well....the Benz dealer came through because:

Roadside assistance never called us back
Dealer said we were 1 1/2 hour away (we r 37.5 miles)
Dealer said..nothing over 40 miles and we were 41.7 (we r 37.5 per MB site directions)
Dealer said that they would charge $150 after hours

We said...why own a Mercedes if you are going to treat us like this.

They said, fax your ID, Proof of Insurance and sign...he orderd the key and said that he has deliveries this way and would drop it off tomorrow.

Nice rebound I would say :D

Then I said...How much to fix my A/C on my 1996 C280,,,,he said no less than $3400, The trade in value is $3700 :o

I had a similar experience, only worse, about a month ago with an MB dealer in Memphis. We were only going to Memphis for a family get-together, but I thought it a good idea to get a couple of extra keys for my 300SD.

It is ninety miles from my drive to the Benz dealer -- in traffic, about two hours. I happily bopped into the parts department, and asked if I could get a couple of keys made. I had my good original and all my ownership docs and ID in hand. The friendly parts guy informed me that they "farmed out" all their keymaking to a locksmith, who happens to be completely across town.

I was due at my son's, so we went from the dealer to his house without backtracking to the locksmith. Of course, the locksmith keeps decent business hours, meaning he was long closed by the time we left town, later that evening. In a subsequent phone call to the smith, I was informed they did not have access to the Benz key data base, and that I'd have to bring in the original. My hope was that I could mail or fax my ID and title to the smith, and have a key made. No luck.

What's up with this type of "service", anyway? I have managed to keep from exploding by convincing myself that the smith only meant that he didn't have a data base for '80 model 300SD's, and that I can get to him the next time I go over. My advice is: do not go needing a key made in Memphis, Tn.
