560 sel outside temp

First things first, this is a great site. After owing my 87 560 sel for just over a year now, this site has helped me with reworking my rear suspension as well as some shorts and bulb replacement(shifter panel done today).

My current problem is thus. I turned my car on a couple of days ago and noticed that my outside temperature display was way off and getting hotter even though it was cooling off outside. Finally it got up to 140 degrees and then shut off the reading. The light for the display still works but there are no numbers.

This is not really an integral working of the car but as most 560 owners can agree, it's nice to have the car working in perfect order just like it was 18 years ago. If anyone has any thoughts on the fix it would be much appreciated.

El Duderino.

Most likely it's the ambient temperature sensor fault.

IIRC, the temp. probe is mounted in front of the radiator; so the readings could be affected (registered higher than actual) by the reflected heat.

do you think that replacing the probe will solve the problem? It is mounted behind the front licence plate mount.

This problem has just occurred as has a problem with my shifter panel light. Coincidentally, my car was in the shop just prior to these problems as the air conditioning was being worked on. Is there any electrical short that could be affecting these two parts?
