W124 door pocket glue?

I would rather not bear the expense of new door pockets. Has anyone found glue strong enough to reattach the vinyl to the top edge of W124 door pockets?

I used some 3M Super Adhesive Trim for my engine hood pad and the vinyl that was seprating from the metal frame around my seatbelt attachment point to the A pillar...

I believe it would work on the door panel area... but I am not 100% sure.

I sprayed it in a small tupperware dish lid first, then with a paint brush, dabbed the area and held the vinyl in place for a 5 mins... has not peeled so far in the blood broiling texas heat...

No glue will hold. I've tried pretty much everything even heating up the material to try and stretch it over. A couple of people on here have tried super trim and some other strong stuff with the same result. Sorry

Gorilla Glue will hold it if you have enough material to work with. You may have to take the door panel off of the car and the map pocket off the door panel to do it right.

Good thread! I was planning on doing just that this month with the 3M stuff I have at the house. Worked fine with the hood pad, but from these posts, I guess it's a no-go for the door pockets...

Super glue can take the heat

I used super glue gel and it is still holding after 5 years. I used medium black binder clips to hold the trim down over the lip overnight to allow the glue to set. Just be careful not to glue the clips to the material and also be careful not to damage the material with the sharp edges of the clips. The medium clips allowed me to clip all along the contours of the pocket. The gel formulation helps to keep the glue where you put it although they do have a new pen applicator that might be even better than the gel. I think I would try the super glue pen applicator with the black binder clips for support, if I ever had to do the same job again. The super glue does seem to make the edges of the material a bit crunchy when it dries, but that is inside the pocket and out of sight. I found that other glues don't stay attached when the heat goes up. They get gooey and they just can't keep hold. Super glue is not affected by the heat. I just remember when an upholstery shop tried to fix a headliner in my wife's Jetta GLI and the glue would get gooey as soon as the summer heat baked the interior of the car. The summer heat is what dislodged my door pocket trim. I was parked at an amusement park on a hot sunny day and even with my sunshield in place and the windows cracked, the temperature inside the car caused the material to pop off of the lips of the pockets.

My pockets after the repair

There is a distinct groove just inside the lip - about the diameter of a pencil. Binder clips or C-clamps or welder clips or whatever you have are good for pressure but it helps to put a pencil or stiff hose in the groove to get the most surface glueing contact. Again you need to get lots of material stretched up there to do it right and it's a lot easier to work with off the car.

It has been a while since I carefully checked my repair, so I had a good feel along the lip. Guess what, there is no more crunchy feeling at the lip. For whatever reason, the super glue is not crunchy anymore. It has been about 5 years since the repair, so maybe it just wore off on the exposed edges. It is still holding firm, however, so I would definitely recommend the same process that I used. I did not remove the door panel, although I am sure that would make it easier. The nice thing about the binder clips is that you can glue down the edge in a sequential manner, by just adding one clip after another clip as you travel along the lip. I did feel that plastic groove inside the pocket, and it would be great if you could get the material to lie completely flat along that edge, but I think it would be very difficult unless you completely removed the pockets from the door panels. Actually, my repair is very neat, even though the pockets were not removed. Believe me, I am a little crazy about details, so if I am happy, I think you could be happy too.

What a great automobile!

Super glue gel worked

Thanks for the suggestion, Ksing44. Super glue gel and the binder clips worked very well. And the repair was made with the door pockets in place.
