Is it the ball joint or the lower control arm?

The god aweful squeak occurs with up and down motions and when turning steering wheel

Yes there is a lower ball joint. You didn't say what chassis the car is.

Lower ball joints are most common part to fail....Why ? 'cose it's the hardest one to install!

Peel the boot back and squirt some oil in there...squeak will go away for a few days.

Our mind reading skills are quite weak here. What year and model are you working on.

Also, there is no way we can check this over the internet. Put the car in the air and start pulling and prying on the joints until you find the loose one.

Good luck

Just fixed the same probelm

I just fixed a similar problem on my 97 S320, and yes it turned out to be the lower ball joint. They do go bad. I had the same squeaking you described and searched for over a month for the culprit. finally the tire jockey at Sears found the problem while balancing and rotating my wheels. Sears did the repair right there for around $300 (they got a new ball joint delivered locally the same day) which blew me away as I never thought they could do much more than sell tires and batteries.

From a previous post it looks like he is talking about his '92 300E. It was the post about the convenience windows operating every time he puts the key in the drivers door lock.

Lower ball joints, without doubt,as mentioned above.

Same thing on my previous BMW and current '84 300 Turbo Diesel.

Torn rubber boots, turn the wheel left full lock and the ball joint will be accessible to shoot oil onto it,then do the right side.

Dependent upon the degree of wear this should last a couple of days to a week or more.

Just tell the girls that it's your ball joints. Maybe they'll offer to lube them for you.
