Airconditioning-- I want some srraight info.
 

I have an 82 300 SD- the airconditioning compressor was locked up,with no belt, I have replaced the compressor,reciever/dryer,-and put in ester oil in those componets- 2oz. in comp & 1 oz. in rd-I have not yet turned anything on, and i would like to know how i go about flushing the old mineral oil out of the rest of the system before I try to recharge the system. also I have gotten alot of conflicting advice as to whether or not R-134 will cool this car--- or should I stick with R-12 --( if I can get it) some mechs have given me advice that R-134 will not cool this system witout replacing all the components--- I find this hard to believe-- Does any one have some really usefull info? also DOES ANYONE HAVE SOME R-12 I could buy at a "resonable Price?" I have a compressor that I could flush solvent thru the system "components that have not been replaceced" I know better than to do that!--- HELP would be appreaciated. :confused:

don't forget to replace the expansion valve, chances are it too is contaminated with metal or other debris, the compressor holds closer to 5oz of oil, make sure that after you put in the oil to turn it by habd with a socket a few times befor the freon charge, add the remaining 3 oz either throught the a/c machine ot disconnect a hose and do it there, alot will come out when you are installing the compressor

6 years ago, when I owned a 1983 300SD, and could not find R12 to replenish a small leak in the AC System, my mechanic suggested that I switch to R-134. He said all he needs to do is extract the remaining R-12, Vacuum the system, change the high and low pressure valves fittings to accommodate his R-134 gauges, add the appropriate oil and refill the system with R-134. He even kept my original dryer, "O" rings etc.

I was skeptical but he said that that's really all that is required. I gave him the go-ahead and three years later when I sold my car, the AC system still worked perfectly. The original small leak was still there, so I had to add some 1/2 Lb of R134 once a year.

I know that many will jump in and say that you should not do what I did. Maybe I was lucky, but that was my experience.
