1981 240d Tranny Problems
 

Hi, i bought reasently bought a 1981 240d Mercedes with a broken manual transmisson. I was able to find a new tranny for the car so i uninstalled the old one and hooked up the new one. After much trying I can't get the thing to go out of reverse. I have tryed moving the gears in all sorts of funny combos but all it does is lock up or move the tires in reverse. Also I dont really know how to hook up the shifting rods from the shifter to the tranny. It is pretty straight forward but the book is saying something different. If someone could please help it would be nice.

What year model did the replacement transmission come from? The transmissions changed about the 1980 model year. If you are using a late shifter on an early transmission, that may well be the explanation.

Did the transmissions look different? The early and late transmissions looked quite a bit different.

it came from a 1981 240d and it was exactly the same in appearence...
