Another Mystery of Life
1 Attachment(s)
My wife picked up her 2003 E-320 today after an annual service.
Because the valet had the car running, she did not notice this little gadget attached to the key fob with a wire tie until she got home. It appears to have a clear plastic insert on the big end, maybe an LED. Does anyone have any idea what it is and why they may have attached it to the key fob? |
It is a tracking device for your wife..
Not really.. I think it is just a complimentary key chain light from them.. they do those goodwill things til your warrantee runs out.. then you can't nothin'..until you remember when they gave you this gift and you buy another new car . |
Looks like yer basic 1/4 inch stereo plug. Unscrew the barrel and see what's in there.
|
or it could be a key tracking system.

aaah..ok, Alex... Let's try " M.O.L.s " for $600...
|
That does not look very practical to be an LED flashlight...
Where is the button to turn it on? |
I think you may just put your thumb across the jack terminals..or the end may push in to make contact.
???? wish the guy would post back w/more info.. now we have to know |
LMAO you guys had me rolling reading those guesses as to what it was.
Whoever serviced the car attaches one of those to the keyring and the key is entered into a system that holds the keys in a locked drawer, each one 'plugged' into its own hole in the drawer, and a computer that controls the system knows which key is in which hole. When someone signs in to the computer and punches up the key they need, it unlocks the drawer and illuminates the LED of the fob attached to the key that entered. When the person removes the key, it keeps track of who took out the key at what time on what day so if someone else tries to get the same key, they will be able to see who it is signed out to. |
Cool..
Is that a Benz thing , or is it a system different dealers buy and use..?? Good Idea. |
Its not a benz only thing, I forget the name of the company that sells it, key something...
The one we have sucks. It will sometimes say a key isn't present when it is, or say the key is there and not light up the LED. My favorite part is when I remove the key I need and "WRONG KEY REMOVED" displays in big red letters on the screen and shows I removed 6 or 7 other keys along with the one I took out. Smack the drawer and all the keys are "magically reinserted" again. Its got some issues still.... |

>> Key Dork .. Was the main concept security or was a lot of keys getting lost ?? |
John called it exactly right. I finally got a call back from the service dept. and they explained how it is used for key security and tracking.
They also said that they would appreciate getting the gadget back. :) :) |

Actually I think it was called KeyLogic as I recall. The machine eliminated someones job and kept better records of who has what. I figured the dealer might want it back. We've lost quite a few as well  |
